DR PAUL C. MOLLITT
DPSYCH MSC DIP MBACP (ACCRED.) BPC
Prior to training as a therapist (2007–2011), I trained as a performer at ArtsEd (2001–2004) and performed in West End musicals including Mamma Mia, Blood Brothers, Fame, and Starlight Express. From a young age, I experienced my own mental health challenges, and in my twenties I had a transformative experience working with a therapist. That process inspired me to retrain and dedicate my career to helping others.
Training
My clinical training was at Birkbeck College, University of London, where I obtained an MSc in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy. I’m a senior accredited member of the BACP, a full registrant of the BPC, and an accredited DIT practitioner. My training and experience are aligned with SCoPEd “Column C”, which represents the highest level of competence within the profession.
I undertook DIT clinical training in collaboration with the Anna Freud Centre, alongside additional training in Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT) for working with clients diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). In 2016, I completed a supervision training with the British Psychotherapy Foundation (BPF). Two years later, I gained a Diploma in Group Work Practice at the Institute of Group Analysis (IGA), followed by further training as a meditation practitioner in both Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) at the Oxford Mindfulness Centre and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) with Mindfulness UK.
In 2024, I completed a Doctorate in Psychotherapy at Metanoia Institute / Middlesex University, researching minority stress. That same year, I began the final three years of a five-year Group Analyst training at Group Analysis North in Manchester — a UKCP-accredited programme.
Ethics are central to my work, and I adhere fully to the BACP Code of Ethics, which you can read here.
Experience
My first role was as an honorary psychodynamic psychotherapist within an NHS secondary care Community Mental Health Team, working long-term with patients with complex needs — a challenging but deeply rewarding formative experience.
I went on to work as a student counsellor at both London Metropolitan University and University College London, supporting individuals and facilitating groups. I also spent several years working within NHS Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services as a Dynamic Interpersonal Therapist, including roles at:
-
South West London & St George’s Mental Health Trust
-
South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust
-
Compass Wellbeing CIC, an NHS-funded social enterprise providing mental health support in Tower Hamlets
In 2017, I took a position at Birkbeck College as a Widening Participation Student Counsellor, where I led a research project on the barriers to counselling faced by men, refugees, and care leavers. The following year, I returned to NHS secondary care with the East London NHS Foundation Trust, working as both a group and individual psychotherapist within the borough of Newham.
I have worked in independent practice since 2013 and moved into full-time private practice in 2021.
Personal Therapy
It’s often said that a therapist’s own experience of personal therapy is the most valuable part of their training — and I strongly agree. It allows us not only to understand what it’s like to sit in the other chair but also to deepen our awareness of ourselves, which is essential if we are to help others.
My own therapeutic journey has been lifelong and continues to shape the way I work. It has included:
-
Five years of Jungian analysis as part of my initial training
-
Two years of person-centred therapy, including hypnotherapy
-
Two years of psychodynamic psychotherapy
-
Two further years of Jungian analysis in the U.S.
-
Group analysis — an ongoing five-year group
